The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the signing of an agreement between India and Egypt on maritime transport in order to strengthen bilateral cooperation in terms of stimulating maritime traffic, information exchange and enhancing commercial flows and training.
“Recognising the significant mutual benefit that can be derived from-cooperation in the area of shipping between the two countries, it has been decided to sign the agreement with a view to strengthening cooperation and to render sustained mutual assistance and advice on merchant shipping and other related maritime matters,” said an official statement.
The agreement will be signed on a “mutually convenient date and venue”, it added.
Maldives legal treaty
The Cabinet also approved the signing of a mutual legal assistance treaty in criminal matters between India and the Maldives to enhance effectiveness in investigation and prosecution.
“In the context of transnational crime and its linkages to terrorism, the proposed treaty will provide a broad legal framework for bilateral cooperation with Maldives in … tracing, restraint and confiscation of proceeds, and instruments of crime as well as funds meant to finance terrorist acts,” the statement said.
