The Airports Authority of India has said nine international companies have evinced interest in participating in its bid to privatise the operations of Chennai airport.

Representatives from the nine companies visited the airport yesterday.

The companies are: IL & FS Transportation Networks, Essar Projects India, Cochin International Airport Ltd, Essel Infraprojects Ltd, GVK, Fraport Saudi Arabia, GMR Airports Ltd, Sahara Group, and Turkish firm Celebi Havacilik Holdings A.S.

AAI will announce a shortlist of seven bidders on October 25. The companies who qualify will submit their bids, which will be opened on December 18.

The plan is to seal the privatisation contract by mid-January. In the fray are two firms who have a presence in airport development; the Delhi and Hyderabad airports were developed by the GMR Group, while Mumbai and Bangalore airports by consortiums led by GVK.

The winner will enter into a public-private partnership with the AAI on an operate, manage, and transfer basis, to develop facilities at the airport, which will require an estimated investment of Rs 1,200 crore in building new domestic terminal, re-carpeting the main runway, and modifying the international terminal.
