Chennai Metro Rail on Friday completed the tunnelling work between Washermanpet and Chennai Central. Work on the 3.4-km stretch began in April 2012.
The Chennai Central Metro Station will be a large hub where both corridors — Washermanpet to Airport and St Thomas Mount to Chennai — will meet.
It will also connect Chennai Railway Station and sub-urban rail service.
From Nehru Park to Egmore, the rail track has already been laid, and work will start from Egmore towards Chennai Central, said an official.
The large station will have two decks, upper and lower level.
The upper deck will connect Central Metro with St Thomas Mount and is expected to be operational by this year end.
The lower deck, connecting Washermenpet to Chennai Airport, will be operational by mid-2018.
