Delhi Metro since its inception has helped reduce vehicular traffic by over five lakh vehicles on roads, leading to fuel savings of Rs 8,000 crore during 2010-11 which could rise progressively to Rs 20,000 crore by 2020, according to an Assocham study.
The study titled ‘Urbanising India and the Mega Metro Network' revealed that over two lakh office goers are now regularly travelling by the rapid transport system and use their cars only to move from home to station and back.
The total reduction in CNG due to traffic of buses diverted to the Metro during 2011-12 is estimated at 40 million kg. Fuel saved due to diverted traffic of cars and two-wheelers will be 138.35 million litres and 25.7 million litres respectively, the report said.
The value of time per person saving at different price levels varies between Rs 5.96 to Rs 7.91 per hour. The Assocham study estimates the net present social benefit for income distributional effects varying between Rs 21,851 crore and Rs 41,997 crore.
