Domestic airlines flew 62.45 lakh passengers in January registering a growth of 21.33 per cent over the 51.47 lakh carried during the same period in the previous year.
The latest data released by the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation shows that IndiGo continued to be the market leader flying 22.76 lakh passengers of the 62.45 lakh passengers who flew in January.
During the month under review, Jet Airways took the number two spot having flown 12.25 lakh passengers followed by Air India (11.65 lakh). The number of passengers flown by Jet Airways will increase further if the 2.78 lakh passengers flown by JetLite, its low cost arm are added to the number of passengers that Jet flew. The DGCA, however, shows the passengers flown by Jet Airways and JetLite separately.
Vistara, the latest entrant to the domestic market flew 15,000 passengers during the month. The airline took to the skies on January 9 and currently has a fleet of 5 Airbus A-320 aircraft which allow it to offer only limited number of flights. Vistara is the brand name of the joint venture airline project between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.
Among the low cost airlines SpiceJet flew 5.87 lakh passengers followed by GoAir (5.53 lakh) while AirAsia India carried 81,000.
Low visibility conditions during the month saw about 2.2 per cent of the being cancelled, according to the data.
