The domestic airlines carried 64.40 lakh passengers in December registering a growth of 15.28 per cent over the 55.86 lakh passengers flown during the same period in 2013, the latest data released by the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation shows.
The DGCA says that the increase in passengers flown in December 2014 is due to the tourist season.
IndiGo continued to be the market leader having carried 23.24 lakh passengers, followed by Jet Airways (12.05 lakh), with Air India taking the third spot, having flown 11.99 lakh passengers. SpiceJet flew 6.71 lakh passengers, GoAir 6.01 lakh, while AirAsia flew 74,000 passengers against 71,000 flown by AirCosta.
The data shows that on a calendar year basis the domestic aviation sector flew 9.69 per cent more passengers, having carried 6.73 crore passengers against 6.14 crore flown during calendar year 2013.
IndiGo beat all the other airlines by a huge margin having flown 2.14 crore passengers during the 12 months of 2014, followed by Air India (1.24 crore). SpiceJet managed to edge out Jet Airways, having flown 6,000 more passengers during calendar year 2014.
