When All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), the transporters body, invited Dr A. P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, to inaugurate their Platinum Jubilee function, little did they know what was in store — an oath! Dr Kalam administered an oath to over 600 transport owners present on the occasion that they will not overload the vehicles above the permissible limit, bring down operational costs, make their fleets accident-free and train the drivers every third year.
“Truck owners and operators should maintain their trucks, have a good suspension system and avoid overloading, which are the main reason for the growing number of accidents in the country. Vehicle manufacturers should develop trucks which need less maintenance, and the civic and highway agencies should construct roads which have less engineering faults and are maintenance-free,” said Dr Kalam.
