Nearly ten flights were diverted from Chennai airport as the main runway’s surface chipped off last night due to the recarpeting work being undertaken in the runway. The flights were mostly domestic and diverted to Bengaluru and Hyderabad, according to a senior airport official.
The problem started when a Saudi Airline was slightly damaged due to the debris on the runway. Following this, the runway was shut between 7.50 pm and 9.20 pm. Normalcy was restored after that, he said.
Recarpeting had started on August 21 after almost a decade at a cost of ₹40 crore.
