A private container terminal, a multi-cargo terminal and three other projects developed at a total cost of Rs 1,492 crore were inagurated at Kamarajar port in Ennore by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways & Shipping.
The container terminal operated by Gujarat-based Adani group was developed under Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer basis at a cost of Rs 1,270 crore. It will have an annual capacity to handle 1.4 million twenty foot equivalent units.
The multi-cargo terminal developed at a cost of Rs 152 crores will handle 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The terminal will be operated by the Chettinad group.
Gadkari also inagurated rail connectivity to the two terminals, e-office and RFID system.
With the commissioning of the two terminals, the port's capacity will increase to 50 million tonnes per annum from the present 32 MTPA.
In a couple of years, the capacity will increase to 90 MTPA when the ongoing projects are completed, says a port press release.
