GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corp (GMCAC), a joint venture between GMR Infrastructure and Megawide Construction Corp of Philippines, today broke ground for the construction of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Terminal 2, to be completed by 2018.
GMR Infra joint venture had won the contract to expand and modernise Mactan-Cebu airport on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis for 25 years. GMR Infra is the designated operator of the airport and the company officially had taken over the responsibility on November 1, 2014.
GMR Infra has initiated steps to boost the tourist traffic, which has resulted in Cebu witnessing a double-digit traffic growth of over 7.2 million in 2014. The improvement in operational efficiency has helped Cebu generate profits from day one.
Benigno S. Aquino III, President of the Philippines, G M Rao, Group Chairman, and Michael Cosiquein, Chairman, Megawide Corporation, attended the ground-breaking ceremony for Terminal 2.
Srinivas Bommidala, Business Chairman Airports, GMR Group, said, “Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks another milestone in this exciting journey. The new terminal will be specifically developed to let the passengers enjoy the Cebuano experience, the moment they set foot in the Philippines. Given our record of building Delhi and Istanbul airports in record time, we are confident that we will open T2 to passengers by mid-2018.”
Louie Ferrer, GMCAC President, said, “As we break ground today for the construction of the MICA’s second terminal, we mark the beginning of our expansion, and emboldens our vision towards becoming the first resort-airport in the world. In the past seven months, the existing terminal has undergone many changes which has greatly improved the experience of our passengers.”
GMR Group owns and operates Delhi airport which is ranked as world’s No.1 airport in its passenger category as well as Hyderabad airport which has been consistently ranked among world’s top three airports in this category over the last seven years. The group had constructed Delhi airport’s Terminal 3 in a record time of 37 months and Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport in 18 months.
