Chairman and Managing Director of defence shipyard Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) Shekhar Mital has said the yard is deriving 30 per cent of its turnover from exports and half of the order book is from exports.
Mittal was speaking after the launch of the first of the two 105M OPVs (Offshore Patrol Vehicles), being built by GSL for the Sri Lankan Navy, in South Goa on Friday.
The Sri Lankan OPV contract is one of the major export contracts being executed by GSL.
The keel of the first vessel was laid on September 10, 2014.
The vessel is in advanced stage of outfitting and will be ready for delivery by August 2017, said a spokesperson after the launch.
The launching of the first Offshore Patrol Vehicle, designed in-house, comes on the heels of the launch of the fifth of the six OPVs built for the Coast Guard, by Goa Governor Mridula Sinha on May 5.
The GSL has the distinction of being the largest exporter shipyard of the country and recently delivered 11 fast interceptor boats (FIBs) to Mauritius and a Damage Control Simulator to Myanmar Navy ahead of schedule, Mital said.
He said that the yard is the largest spender on research and development and on modernisation amongst Defence public undertaking shipyards.
