The Waltair division of the East Coast Railway (E Co R) has been hit hard by cyclone Hudhud and the loss is estimated at around Rs 250 crore.
The roofs of platforms and foot-over-bridges, the giant television screen at Visakhapatnam railway station, thousands of railway quarters in the city, roofs of the diesel and electric loco sheds, new coaching complex, C & W Yards and sick line have been damaged by the gales.
The loss to these assets, according to preliminary estimates, has been put at Rs 150 crore. The track restoration, repairs of bridges and other works on the Kothavalasa - Kirandul line would require around Rs 80 crore.
The revenue loss due to hampering of operations for four days on the account of the cyclone has been estimated at around Rs 70 crore. The passenger earnings from Visakhapatnam average Rs.1.5 crore a day and the goods earnings are around Rs 17 crore a day.
Though the re-roofing and repair works at the Visakhapatnam Railway Station may take some more time, the railway authorities restored traffic within three days after the severe cyclone.
The traffic on the badly damaged K-K line has not been restored yet and it may take some more time, according to the authorities.
