IndiGo launched flights on Wednesday from here to Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Chennai.
At a press meet on the occasion, Mr Sanjay Kumar, the Chief Commercial Officer, said, “We operate daily 319 flights to various destinations in the country and abroad and in the past three months we have added 54 flights.” From April 4, the airline would operate Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam-New Delhi flights.
He said expansion of operations in South India, especially in fast-growing cities such as Visakhapatnam, was part of the company's growth strategy, which currently has a market share of 20.8 per cent. He said IndiGo is the second-largest private air carrier after Jet Airways and its fares are the lowest. He said, “Our fares are low, flights are on time and we offer a hassle-free travel experience to our passengers.”
IndiGo, with a fleet of 51 new Airbus A 320 aircraft, launched in September last flights from New Delhi to Muscat, Kathmandu, Dubai, Singapore and Bangkok as well as flights from Mumbai to Bangkok and Dubai. “We want to have more international flights and we are awaiting approval of the Government,” he said.
Mr Sanjay Kumar said the Gurgaon-headquartered airline has 5,000 employees with 38 per cent of them being women. Till date, IndiGo has handled 40 million passengers and recorded over 2,88,000 flight departures since launch.
In response to a question, he said IndiGo will consider at a later stage connecting Visakhapatnam with Singapore and other international destinations.
