The airports in Tiruchi, Mangalore, Coimbatore, Lucknow and Varanasi could get full international airports status on Thursday.
Official sources told Business Line that the issue of granting full international airport status to airports in these five cities is likely to be taken up at the weekly meeting of the Union Cabinet scheduled to be held here on Thursday.
At the moment, each of these cities have at least one international airline operating to the airport there. Air India Express operates to both Tiruchi and Mangalore, while Air Asia recently started services to Tiruchi.
Similarly, FlyDubai operates regular flights between Lucknow and Dubai and Mihin Lanka and Thai Airways have seasonal operations to Varanasi.
Sources indicated that if the Cabinet clears the proposal of upgrading the airports in these five cities, international airlines will find it easier to start operating regular flights there.
