Iran releases Indian crude oil tanker

Shipping Corporation of India’s crude tanker, MV Desh Shanti, has sailed from Iran.

“The ship has sailed yesterday night,’’ multiple sources told Business Line.

Iran has decided to release the ship, detained by it for the past 24 days, after India said it will pay up to $1 million if it is found that the crude oil tanker had polluted the Persian Gulf.

Iran detained the ship carrying crude oil from Iraq to India on August 13, saying it was polluting Iranian waters.

India has denied the allegation and, according to Shipping Corporation of India, the vessel was not in Iranian waters when it was detained. Raising strong objections to Teheran’s move, New Delhi had initiated discussions through diplomatic channels.
