Trouble for Kolkata Ports Trust (KoPT) continued to mount as more ships were diverted from Haldia dock to a private port at Dhamra in Odisha.
Sources in KoPT said STX Mutiara carrying 74,000 coal for NTPC’s Farraka and Kahalgoan plants meant for Haldia port stranded at the Sandheads since October 12 was diverted during the day to Dhamra port.
“KoPT illegally tried to unload cargo of Mutiara through four inland barges, but Director General of Shipping detained them and unloading was not allowed,” the sources said.
“KoPT should have sent MS class barges as only those are allowed in the high seas at the Sandheads,” they added.
DG shipping is likely to take action in this regard.
Manish Jain, Chairman of KoPT could not be contacted for a statement.
Cargo handling at Haldia was disrupted after Haldia Bulk Terminals (HBT) suspended cargo handling at berth 2 and 8 with mechanised cranes from September 25.
The HBT had moved the High Court seeking its intervention to maintain law and order at the Haldia dock complex.
There has been labour unrest at the Haldia docks after HBT sacked 275 employees.
