L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited has begun works on the metro rail over bridges at railways crossings which require coordination between railway authorities and metro developers, as it also requires disruption of traffic for some select hours.
The works on the metro rail over bridge has begun at Bharatnagar which spans about 46 feet. The three corridors where the elevated metro rail project is coming up require development of eight such rail over bridges. These bridges range from 35 feet with span length of 98 feet and go up to 74 feet with span length of 128 feet.
These bridges are being constructed factoring future requirements and plans of Indian Railways including move to run double-decker trains. These have been designed in consultation with eminent rail bridge experts. Of the eight metro rail over bridges, six are concrete bridges and two are steel bridges.
Depending upon the location and technical requirements, the Metro designers are adopting different approaches to erect these bridges. In few places, where the rail tracks are already on elevated bridges, the Metro bridges will cross these railway bridges at double the elevation.
Keeping in view the future railway plans and the condition that no metro pillar can be placed in between the railway tracks, the main span is designed for 63 meters (213 feet).
Since this is a complex engineering exercise, the complex construction would be supervised by experts from metro and railways.
The entire operation will be carried out over the railway tracks and hence the railway traffic will be closed for three hours twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. One such bridge requires traffic block 14 times, according to Metro.
