L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited is all set to go green harnessing the power of sun with solar rooftop and ground installations, while also sourcing energy from renewable sources, including wind energy.
The metro rail, which is now at advanced stage of commissioning the 72-km stretch of elevated metro rail across three dense corridors in Hyderabad, is working towards ensuring that it meets a third of its energy requirements through renewable sources.
MP Naidu, Project Director, L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited, told BusinessLine : “Already solar power units have been installed on four metro stations and gradually we expect to cover all metro stations, other buildings and even parts of the open area in terminal points where we have 100 acres with solar units.”
“The idea is to meet at least a third of power requirement through renewable energy sources and we also expect to procure power from wind and solar projects to meet the requirements,” he said.
“Thus far, a stretch of about 30 km across two lines has been commissioned in November 2017 and we expect to commission two more lines by August and September 2018, thereby fully commissioning two stretches. The third line will take some more time,” he said.
Energy-efficient design
The Metro will be a Green metro conforming to various norms laid down by the Indian Green Building Council. The solar plants set up on four metro stations have been taken up on Resco model where a company sets up the plant with its investment and supplies power to the metro line at a fixed cost.
“We expect to cover all the metro stations in a phased manner,” he explained.
The entire metro has been designed to consume less energy be it location and station design, where train has to take small gradient, which acts as a natural brake and leave out of station with a natural slope.
Then the rolling stock is designed such that they require lower energy compared to some other metros.
The building management system put in place brings down the number of people deployed in various operational areas. The management system itself ensures there is no loss of energy or water,” he explained.
A high-powered safety team is expected to inspect some sections of the metro and approve them for operation soon, he said.
