Shipping giant Maersk Group’s has decided to recycle two container vessels at Alang shipyard in Gujarat. Both ships would be recycled at Shree Ram yard, which is certified to carry out recycling work according to the standards of the Hong Kong Convention.

The group in a press statement said that as a policy it only carry out ship recycling responsibly. Until recently, this was only feasible in a limited number of yards in China and Turkey. Steady improvements of conditions have been witnessed in ship recycling yards in Alang in the last couple of years. Following several audits at upgraded facilities in Alang in 2015, the Maersk Group concluded that responsible recycling can be accelerated in the area, if the engagement is made now, the statement said.
