The Rail Budget has allocated about ₹2,064 crore to Tamil Nadu for 2016-17, a marginal increase over the current year’s ₹2,042 crore.
This is also the highest allocation in the last five years since ₹1,250 crore in 2011-12.
A bulk of the allocation is towards construction of railway over bridges and rail underpasses or subways to do away with level crossings. This includes 13 rail over bridges and 84 under bridges or subways.
The Railways has also allocated ₹30 lakh for a survey for a new rail line linking Dindigul in southern Tamil Nadu and Sabarimala, a pilgrimage centre in Kerala. It has also earmarked ₹134 crore for a new line linking Morappur in Dharmapuri District and Dharmapuri, which revives a long defunct line.
