As a precautionary measure against the cyclone Tauktae, Mumbai International Airport is closing down all flight operations between 11 am to 10 pm on Monday. There were cancellations of at least 34 arrivals and 22 departures whereas, seven flights were diverted.
According to weather reports, the cyclone is likely to hit parts of Maharashtra on May 17. In this regard, a Mumbai airport spokesperson had earlier said that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) was closing down all flight operations from 1100-1400 hrs of 17th May 2021 as a precaution.
However, Mumbai airport officials said that "With the announcement of the cyclone alert, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) had closed all flight operations with effect from 11:00 to 20:00 hours on 17th May 2021."
The airport witnessed seven diversions. "In the wake of the alert, a few airlines have decided to cancel services to Mumbai. CSMIA has registered the cancellations of 34 arrivals and 22 departures."
On Sunday, Goa airport had suspended its operations completely in light of the cyclone. The cyclone is likely to hit Gujarat on May 17.
There has been a severe impact of the cyclone within the financial capital. Several tree felling incidents have been reported in Mumbai. In order to minimise the risk, the authorities have shut down the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai too.
