Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has contributed 0.45 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product of India and 13.53 per cent to Delhi's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in 2009-10.
A study by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), concluded recently, the airport, run by GMR group, directly contributed Rs 4,200 crore through air transport and airport services, Rs 7,700 crore indirectly through supply chain.
“The induced impact through tourism and investment resulted in a gain of Rs 17,400 crore,” Mr P.S. Nair, Chief Executive Officer (Corporate-Airport Sector) of GMR group, said.
Mr Nair told
“A similar study on impact of Hyderabad airport too is on the anvil,” he said.
By 2020, the overall economic impact of Delhi airport is pegged at Rs 90,900 crore, forming 0.7 per cent of the national GDP and 22.2 per cent of Delhi GSDP.
During the construction phase, it contributed Rs 6,800 crore, or 0.10 per cent to GDP and 3.13 per cent to Delhi's GSDP. It created 64,000 jobs and 4.52 lakh jobs through supply chain activity, Mr Nair added.
“Results shows how aviation sector plays the role of a catalyst in national economy,” he said.
