New Mangalore Port handles bulk salt cargo

The New Mangalore Port handled 10,000 bags of bulk salt cargo.

New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled 10,000 bags of bulk salt cargo on Sunday.

The vessel – m.v. Allcargo Arati – carrying 400 tonnes of salt from Kandla port called at New Mangalore Port on September 23. After discharging the entire consignment, the vessel sailed out on Monday.

NMPT Chairman, P. Tamilvanan said the consignment consisted of various types of salt, including free flow loose salt and iodised salt. This coastal cargo was brought by the distributor for local distribution.

Tamilvanan said that the port’s efforts to attract and enhance the volume of coastal cargo have resulted in the flow of diversified cargoes such as salt to New Mangalore Port.

The port handles many essential commodities such as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), edible oil, cereals, and fertilisers among others, he said.

A press release by the NMPT said here on Monday that the port handled 16.04 million tonnes of cargo till September 24 of 2012-13 as against 15.63 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The release said that Sri Ganesh Shipping Agency was the stevedoring, handling and clearing and forwarding (C&F) agents for the salt cargo at New Mangalore Port.
