New Mangalore Port posts 31% growth in first 45 days of fiscal

The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) recorded 31.52 per cent growth in cargo handling during the first 45 days of 2013-14.

The port handled 5.09 million tonnes (mt) of the cargo till May 15 against 3.87 mt handled during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Speaking to

Business Line , P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, said that the handling of crude oil and product cargoes of MRPL (Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd), and other cargoes such as coal and containers have seen a good growth during the period.

The port handled 1.92 mt (1.39 mt) of crude oil and 1.05 mt (0.5 mt) of product cargo for MRPL.

The total coal handling at the port crossed a million tonne mark in the first 45 days of the fiscal. The port handled 1.41 mt (0.59 mt) of coal during the period. Of this, the port handled 0.6 mt (0.29 mt) of coal for UPCL (Udupi Power Corporation Ltd) till May 15. The container cargo handling witnessed a growth of 77.47 per cent during the period. He said that the port handled 6144 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers till May 15 of 2013-14 against 3462 TEUs in the corresponding period of 2012-13.

Tamilvanan said that the port handled 9.29 lakh tonnes of railway-bound traffic till May 15 of 2013-14 (7.28 lakh tonnes), recording a growth of 27.60 per cent.
