A new train shuttle service has commenced for import containers from PSA’s Chennai International Terminals Pvt Ltd (CITPL) at Chennai port to Inland Container Deport, Tondiarpet (ICD TNPM) in North Chennai.
The first rake carrying 76 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of import containers was flagged off from the port last Friday.
This movement of import containers complements the movement of export containers by rake from ICD TNPM, which commenced from June 19 providing an alternative mode of transport for the container traffic.
A fully laden rake from CITPL can reach ICD TNPM within five hours compared to around three to ten hours taken by around 40 trucks to move an equivalent volume of containers to various container freight stations near Tondiarpet.
The move will help Chennai port reduce the number of trucks and minimise the road congestion for containers moving to and from the port, says a press release from CITPL.
