New Mangalore Port handled 1,44,621 tonnes of coffee cargo in 6,786 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in 2011-12. This is 44.72 per cent of the country’s total production.
Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), revealed this while addressing coffee exporters from Kushalnagar in Kodagu district recently.
He said the port handled 1,28,378 tonnes in 6,103 TEUs of containers in 2010-11. With this, the port recorded a growth of 12.65 per cent in 2011-12.
Quoting the statistics from Coffee Board, he said the state produced 2.27 lakh tonnes during 2011-12. The country's total production was 3.22 lakh tonnes.
He said that Karnataka is the largest producer of coffee in India.
