New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled instant coffee cargo that was meant for export to Poland.
A press release by NMPT said here that the port received instant coffee in 40-feet high cube containers for the first time for exporting to Poland.
The container was stuffed at Kushalnagar in Kodagu district and moved to the port by road.
P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, said that the movement of high cube containers from Kushalnagar through Mysore-Mani state highway is expected to give a boom to the movement of more containers to NMPT in the ensuring coffee season. He said that the container movement to the port has become more viable following the widening and strengthening of the state highway.
SLN Coffee Pvt Ltd, Kushalnagar, was the exporter and Akash Shipping, Mangalore, was the handling agent of the cargo. The consignment was loaded to the vessel -- m.v. Tiger Mango -- sailed out on October 15, he said.
Tamilvanan stated that the proactive marketing efforts made by the port at various locations such as Madikeri, Kushalnagar, Hassan, Mysore, Shimoga etc., during the past few years have given good results.
During 2011-12, NMPT exported 1.44 lakh tonnes [6786 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs)] of coffee cargo.
Tamilvanan urged the potential exporters from Mysore-Nanjangud region, who are exporting similar type of containers, to explore the possibility of moving their containers through New Mangalore Port.
