More than 100 per cent increase in coal loading boosted the freight loading of Palakkad division of Southern Railway during 2012-13.
A press release said here that the division loaded 7.068 million tonnes during 2012-13 against 5.344 mt in 2011-2012, recording a growth of 32.16 per cent.
It said that the division loaded 5.414 mt of coal during 2012-13 against 2.627 mt in 2011-12, which is an increase of 106 per cent.
Loading from Panambur area in New Mangalore was 6.495 mt. This contributed 91.2 per cent to the overall loading of the division.
Total earnings — including freight, passenger and miscellaneous earnings — of the division for 2012-13 stood at Rs 878.46 crore against Rs 665.52 crore in the previous year, recording an increase of 32 per cent.
