The Palakkad division of Southern Railway has seen a growth of 18.13 per cent in the sale of tickets in the first nine months of 2014-15.
The division sold tickets amounting to ₹485.36 crore during April-December period of 2014-15 against ₹410.85 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
The Palakkad division attributed this growth to the intensification of ticket-checking drive during the period.
Ticket-checking earnings increased to ₹4.06 crore in the first three quarters of 2014-15 from ₹2.93 crore in the corresponding period of 2013-14.
Ticket-checking earnings refer to the earnings collected from offenders involved in travelling without tickets, littering, smoking and other illegal activities during train travel or at railway stations.
A press release by the division said here on Saturday that the division has conducted ticket-checking through methods such as ambush checks (surprise checks on trains), fortress checks (station-based checks covering all the entry and exit points), and cross-country checks (checks on trains and stations on a random basis).
