The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will constitute a technical committee that will suggest ways to curb overloading on highways.
It will suggest ways to make requisite space available near toll plazas.
The weigh in motion bridges can be installed at convenient locations about two km before on either side of the toll plazas, to prevent toll plazas from getting clogged. This requires land, and potential changes in road design, stated a release.
For this, the committee will review documents that govern the highway contracts — the provision of Model Concession Agreement, User Fee Rules-2008 and Weight Enforcement Stations, stated an official release.
Overloading damages road infrastructure, leading to higher expenses from the exchequer to maintain roads. It is also one of the major causes for increasing number of road accidents.
