The Railways is set to enhance focus on saving energy consumption costs as most of its revenue generation sectors face headwinds.

One such measure is the increase in outlay for electrification of 2,000 km of track after achieving 1,600 km in 2015-16 fiscal. “It has been established that electrical traction is more economical besides being environment-friendly. We will formulate a framework where the net savings from electrification will be able to finance capital expenditure,” Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said. Further, locomotives with auxiliary load are being manufactured. “Use of these locomotives will enable elimination of power cars, thereby replacing them with passenger coaches which will enhance carrying capacity and significantly reduce noise level and fuel consumption,” said Prabhu.
