Jet Airways, on late Thursday night, announced that former diplomat Ranjan Mathai has resigned as an independent director from the board. This is the second resignation within a fortnight after former Shell CEO Vikram Singh Mehta had resigned from the airline’s board as independent director and audit committee member.
A statement issued by the debt-strapped airlines added, Mathai was quitting due to increasing pressure on his time from other commitments and consequent inability to devote the time required to discharge his obligations, as an independent director.
Mathai, who is the former Indian Foreign Secretary and Indian High Commissioner to the UK was onboard since March 2017. Mathai has served in Indian Embassies in Vienna, Colombo, Washington, Tehran and Brussels.
A comment issued on behalf of Mathai stated that in view of the increasing call on his time from other existing commitments, including some of academic nature, “I am no longer able to devote the time required to meet my obligations, as an independent director on the Board of Jet Airways and have accordingly decided to resign from the Board. I take this opportunity to thank you for your invaluable support to me in discharging my duties as a member of the Board since I joined last year.”
