The Maharashtra Government has sanctioned Rs 200 crore for the first phase of a new international airport proposed to be built at Rajgurunagar, around 40 km from Pune.
The funds will kick-start Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation’s acquisition of 1,800 hectares to build two runways and amenities.
The land will be developed by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company which has estimated that the project will cost Rs 1,000 crore.
The airport was earlier expected to come up near Chakan, and the new site is to its west where around 1,800 acres has been identified by the district administration for the purpose.
Prabhakar Deshmukh, Divisional Commissioner of Pune, said that the notification of the land will be issued next month.
