The first diesel engine with 5 per cent mix of bio-diesel will make its debut on the South Central Railway on the occasion of World Environment Day today.
This is part of the several measures to arrest environment degradation and place SCR as a model zone on Indian Railways, South Central Railway General Manager Srivastava said.
He said SCR was generating one MW of solar power for use in lighting, water heating etc. It has already fitted bio-toilets in nine train rakes and appealed to the passengers to safeguard the bio-toilets by not littering in them.
The GM inaugurated an exhibition on 'SCR and Environment Protection'.
