A very large crude carrier, owned by state-run Shipping Corporation of India, suffered an explosion on Tuesday in one of her tanks, off the coast of Oman.
The ship was en-route to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.
Three crew members of the MT Desh Vaibhav of 316,409 dead weight tonne (dwt) capacity, are missing following the explosion, while another crew member who suffered burns was evacuated by helicopter, the company said in a statement. Assistance from the Oman Royal Navy and other ships in the vicinity was sought. SCI said the fire on the ship has subsided and a fire fighting vessel was on the way to the stricken ship to cool down the tanks.
