A second airport is to come up in the National Capital Region of Delhi. A decision to this effect was cleared at a high-level Government meeting here today. The proposal will now have to be cleared by the Union Cabinet before work can begin on the project.
As per existing rules, GMR, which runs the Delhi airport, will have the first right of refusal for taking up this proposal as the airport is likely to come up within 150 km of the existing airport.
The current rules don’t allow a second airport to come up within 150 km of the existing airport unless mandated by the Cabinet.
The promoter of the existing airport is given the first right of refusal to take up the second airport project.
