A Supreme Court Empowered Committee visited the Krishnapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday to examine the alleged destruction of nearby mangroves and other environment damages due to port operations.
The Committee was formed by the Court based on a petition filed by residents of villages near the port, alleging that the port had destroyed swathes of mangroves in that area.
The Committee members took the views of the residents and local political leaders. They also visited the Kandaleru creek and other coastal villages
Meanwhile, some political leaders have alleged that they were not informed of the Committee’s visit as part of a deliberate ploy to censure their views. They staged demonstrations, protesting against the environmental damages being done by the port operations.
A port official said Krishnapatnam Port had been planting more than four lakh seedlings during monsoon every year, which, in fact, enlarged the mangrove area.
