A day after AirAsia announced Ratan Tata as Chief Advisor for its Indian venture, it made S. Ramadorai, another Tata Group veteran, the Chairman of the low-cost carrier.
Confirming the appointment of the former TCS chairman, AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes tweeted on Monday: “A giant of Indian Industry. A great thinker. Man from the South. That completes our team. Advisor, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and board. Quite a heavyweight team for super exciting AirAsia India.”
Ramadorai is currently adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the National Council on Skill Development, and holds a Cabinet minister’s rank. He is also Vice-Chairman of TCS.
On Sunday, when the airline announced Ratan Tata as Chief Advisor, it also promised ‘nano’ airfares.
In February, AirAsia submitted a proposal to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board stating it has tied up with Tata Sons and Arun Bhatia of Telestra Tradeplace Pvt Ltd to start an airline here.
The airline, which will be headquartered in Chennai, expects to take to the skies later this year. The proposal is currently being examined by Ministry of Civil Aviation.
