Tuticorin’s V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust has set a record in the handling of cargo in a single day.
According to S. Natarajan, Chairman, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust, the port handled 1,39,610 tonnes of cargo, surpassing the previous record of 1,17,641 tonnes achieved on 11.07.2009.
The major cargo that contributed to the achievement are: industrial coal, thermal coal, containers cargo, gypsum, limestone and copper concentrate. Also, the container terminal operated by PSA Sical, handled 45,691 TEUs in August, surpassing the previous highest performance of 45,126 TEUs in March, 2008. This is the highest number of TEUs handled by the container terminal in a single month .
Natarajan urged the work force to continue with the same level of performance to achieve the Ministry’s cargo traffic target of 30 mt and container traffic target of 5.04 lakh TEUs set for the financial year 2013-14.
