Eradicating secrecy is critical for an organisation. Removing it enhances good communication within it, said Mr B.B. Verma, Divisional Railway Manager (Mysore), South Western Railway.

Speaking on ‘Manpower planning' at the Business Line Club sponsored by Syndicate Bank at JSS College, Mysore, Mr Verma said “In addition to secrecy eradication, performance feedback and counselling should be transparent. Informing employees about their weakness and strengths goes a long way in enhancing satisfaction and increasing motivation. This helps in guidance for improving performance.”

Sharing his experience in the Railways on deployment and re-deployment, Mr Verma said, “In view of major technological changes taking place in the Indian Railways, it is imperative to identify activities that have become redundant and re-deploy staff who have become surplus.”

On the topic of productivity improvement, he said, “Railways hasinvested huge amounts in modernisation of its workshops with a view to increasing productivity and a large number of semi-skilled trades have been reclassified as skilled to increase the availability of skilled workforce. “These developments have a direct impact on the productivity and allowed time for various jobs in the workshops. Further productivity improvement can be achieved through co-operation between management, staff and trade unions,” he added.

Career planning

Career planning and development is another key aspect in an organisation. “Identifying career opportunities for employees within the organisation, making plans for their growth is crucial,” explained Mr Verma. Self-appraisal, including performance and potential appraisal, enhances employee-organisation (top management) relationship. Mr Verma said “To assist an employee with career and succession planning is good for it helps in monitor performance, plan for their future, assess promotability, identify training needs.”

The objectives of human resources have to be well understood. Focus should be on developing employees as individuals and tapping their inner potential for their own and organisational growth. Prof B.V. Sambhasiva, Principal, JSS Degree College and Prof R.M. Chintamani of the Department of Commerce were present along with teaching staff of the college.
