The country is passing through a transparency revolution that can't be stopped midway, said the Defence Minister, Mr A.K. Antony. He said the walls of secrecy were gradually crumbling in every field, including politics, business, administration and judiciary.
The Defence Minister's statement assumes significance in the backdrop of nation-wide anti-corruption protests aimed at the scams dogging the UPA government.
Mr Antony said “India is not ready as politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, armed forces and all those who are holding key positions are not ready for this transition. That is why there are problems in this transition.” He was talking to reporters at an interaction here on Wednesday.
Crediting Parliament with increasing transparency, Mr Antony said, “For that (transparency), you have to give credit to Indian media, NGOs and social activists but ultimately to Indian Parliament through the Right to Information Act.”
It is the RTI Act that would help the transparency revolution percolate to all walks of life, organisations and families, he said, and added that ultimately it is the voter who is the most important weapon for bringing about this change.
