The L.V. Prasad Eye Institute opened its hundredth centre at Vijayawada on the eve of its Silver Jubilee year.
Over the years, the institute has been steadily expanding its facilities in keeping with its capacity-building strategy. May has seen the premier eye institute launch ten primary eye-care centres and one city-centre, taking the strength of its network to 100 locations.
“I am delighted that LVPEI has touched a century of eye-care facilities in the service of people,” says Dr Gullapalli N. Rao, Chairman, L.V. Prasad Eye Institute.
The launch of the institute's silver jubilee year on June 1, 2011, saw a flurry of activities with the State Governor Mr E.S.L. Narasimhan inaugurating it and a series of lectures, according to a press release here on Thursday.
The institute was established in Hyderabad in 1987 and evolved into a world-class eye-care facility, encompassing clinical care, education, research, rehabilitation and high-impact rural eye-care. It is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for prevention of blindness, and a pioneer in developing eye-health models for underserved areas of the developing world, the release added.
Apart from patient care, the institute's services include receiving over 35,000 eye donations at its eye bank, providing training to over 13,000 eye-care professionals from all over the world, actively engaging in research activities that have seen the award of 21 PhDs and publication of over 1,000 peer-reviewed papers.
