As many as 11,370 farmers and farm labourers had committed suicide in 2016, as per provisional data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Minister of State for agriculture Parshottam Rupala informed the Lok Sabha.
He said that the NCRB reports on farmer suicides are available only till 2015 and only provisional data are available for 2016.
As per this record, 11,370 persons — 6,351 farmers and 5,019 agricultural labourers — took their lives due to farm distress as against 12,602 suicides in 2015. Nearly of a third of these deaths were reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka (2,079) and Madhya Pradesh (1,321), the data showed.
As per the provisional records, there was drastic reduction of the number of suicides in Telangana in 2016 — 645 compared with 1,400 suicides in 2015.
In Karnataka farmer suicides went up to 2,079 in 2016 from 1,569 in 2015.
There was nearly 30 per cent drop in farmer suicides in Chhattisgarh with the numbers provisionally reported coming down to 682. Another surprise sprung by the NCRB data was that there had been no farm-related suicides in West Bengal in both 2015 and 2016.
