A chamber meeting will be convened soon to address pollution concerns at Ennore, said Mr D. Jayakumar, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker, at the inauguration of a public healthcare centre set up by fertiliser company Coromandel International.

The Speaker's announcement was in response to queries raised by ward councillors on “depleting water table” and “pollution” due to nearby factories.

Mr A. Vellayan, Executive Chairman, Murugappa group, said where there are industries, there will be pollution; but companies have to manage pollution.

Coromandel, a Murugappa group company, has a plant in Ennore. The company says it has set up an “impervious lining” at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore to ensure there is no seepage of gypsum.

“The Murugappa group is a responsible company and has conformed to what is required,” said Mr Vellayan, on the sidelines of the inauguration of a public health centre at Kathivakkam, near Ennore, Chennai.

In addition to a team of doctors, nurses and pharmacist, the healthcare centre will house facilities for collecting samples. The fee is Rs 10 for one week of consultation. Medicines and tests will be available at subsidised costs.
