Tax and legal experts from across the country will gather here for two days this week to deliberate over the ways to bring India’s taxation system in line with the globalised economic order.
Supreme Court judge Justice Altamas Kabir will inaugurate the conference, slated for March 17-18. Justice Jasti Chelameswar of the Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court Chief Justice, Mr A. K. Goel will also attend the meet.
“The delegates will debate various issues, including shortcomings of the current taxation system, the accountability of the judiciary and international best practices.
“We will submit a proposal to the Government based on the decisions arrived at during the conference,” the Arunachal Pradesh Advocate General, Mr Ashok Saraf, said.
About 600 delegates will take part in the conference, which is being jointly organised by the All-India Federation of Tax Practitioners (East Zone) and the Tax Bar Association, Guwahati.
Mr Saraf said the needs and challenges of the tax system have changed in recent years with economic liberalisation and globalisation.
“However, there are certain shortcomings in the taxation system. The conference aims to discuss the shortcomings and find ways to plug them,” he said.
The conference will witness five technical sessions where issues such as deficiencies of VAT laws and service tax, among others, will also be taken up.
