Beware the wave: Crows on a cell phone tower.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests has ordered another study on the impact of electromagnetic radiation from cell phone towers on avian population.

Following the crow mystery in Kolkata and recently in Orissa, where crows dropped dead in large numbers, the Ministry has ordered a post-mortem and also a study to check if radiation from cell phone towers could be a reason for that, said Ms Jayanthi Natarajan, Minister for Environment and Forests.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the Business Ethics Conference – Beacon 2012, organised by Loyola Institute of Business Administration here today, she said the study report is expected in three months. Besides, the telecom industry needs to have a taskforce to monitor radiation from these towers, she observed.

Earlier, the Ministry initiated a similar study – A possible impact of communication towers on wildlife birds and bees' which blamed electromagnetic radiation from communication towers for the declining numbers of sparrows and bees. It said the radiation decreases egg production in the bees.
