The Bharatiya Janata Party President, Amit Shah, today said that the NDA Government led by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has managed to bring down inflation which has added about Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,500 into a middle-class house.

What the 10-year rule of the UPA Government could not achieve, seven months of Modi Government has managed to do so by taming the inflation. Inflation had been one of the major concerns over the last 10 years, he said, addressing a media conference here today.

GDP growth

The economy, which was growing at 8.6 per cent when the NDA Government handed over reins to UPA in 2004, was brought down to 4.6 in 2014. In less then two quarters, the NDA Government has helped it grow to 5.7 per cent, he said.

Listing out several major achievements of the BJP headed coalition Government at the Centre, Amit Shah said several measures taken up by the Government have brought economic growth on the main agenda. The policy paralysis, which plagued the UPA Government, has been put behind and the global investment community is upbeat on India, he said.

Ghar Vapsi issue

Asked about the recent controversy over Ghar Vapsi issue, Amit Shah said: “BJP stand is clear in favour of a legislation against forceful conversion. But the so-called secular parties have not come forward. Desh ko media se chalayenge ya kanoon se (Will we run the country by media or by rule of law)?'' .

Ordinance route

On the Government preferring to take to the ordinance route to bring about legislation, Amit Shah said 22 Bills were passed in Parliament. “Due to lack of time, these ordinances (on land acquisition, insurance etc) were brought about to accelerate the growth of the economy. We are confident that these would get passed within six months,” he said.

Referring to the stalemate post the elections in Jammu & Kahsmir, Amit Shah said: “Talks were underway and Government would soon be formed. The stalemate is there due to the nature of the mandate.”

Membership drive

On his maiden visit to Telangana to announce a massive membership drive, Amit Shah said, “BJP plans to induct 10 crore people into the party fold across the country through its online membership drive. In Telangana, we expect to induct about 35 lakh people. BJP fared well in the recent elections in Telangana garnering 22 per cent vote share. By encouraging membership, we are keen to strengthen our position in the state.”

Referring to the black money issue, Amit Shah said the names of 700 people involved in this have been handed over to the Supreme Court and Special Investigation Team. It was for them to declare their names.
