Most States oppose inclusion of petrol, liquor under GST

Several States are opposed to inclusion of petroleum products and liquor in the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

This emerged at a meeting of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers here on Monday.

“Most of the States... have opposed bringing petroleum products and liquor in the GST framework,” A.R Rather, Chairman of the Empowered Committee, told reporters after the meeting.

The meeting, which deliberated the revised draft of the Constitutional Amendment Bill, also saw some States express reservation on inclusion of “entry tax” in the GST fold.

The Centre had in September - in the revised draft of the Bill, circulated to the States - proposed inclusion of petroleum and liquor under GST.

The Empowered Committee did not complete its discussion on the revised Bill. “We will try to conclude the discussion in the next meeting,” Rather said.
