Oilmeal exports increased by 84 per cent to 3.2 lakh tonnes in May, 2011, from 1.73 lakh tonnes in the same month last year on the back of record production of oilseeds in the 2010—11 crop year.
Exports of oilmeal in the first two months of the current fiscal more than doubled to 8.21 lakh tonnes from 3.77 lakh tonnes in the year—ago period, the Solvent Extractor’s Association of India (SEA) said in a statement.
Oilmeal imports by Japan from India during April—May, 2011, jumped more than three—fold to 2.05 lakh tonnes from 48,887 tonnes in the year—ago period. Vietnam imported 1.10 lakh tonnes during the period under review, as against 41,853 tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.
According to SEA data, oilmeal exports have risen for seven consecutive months in the current oil year (November, 2010—October, 2011).
In the current oil year till May, exports have nearly doubled to 40.04 lakh tonnes, as against 20.58 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.
“Export of oilmeals increased continuously due to sharp increase in oilseeds production to 30.25 million tonnes in current year (2010—11), compared to 24.88 million tonnes in the previous year (2009—10),” the association said.
The SEA noted that the increased availability of oilseeds led to higher crushing and production of oil and meals for domestic consumption and export.
