The total earnings of the Palakkad division of Southern Railways recorded 18.78 per cent growth during the first nine months of 2013-14, according to an official statement here on Monday.
The statement quoting Anand Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager of Palakkad division, said total earnings during April-December of 2013-14 stood at ₹765.40 crore as against ₹644.39 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
Of this, the earnings from goods traffic went up by 14.89 per cent during the period. The division recorded earnings of ₹317.73 crore (₹276.54 crore) during the nine months.
The earnings from passenger fares increased to ₹405.17 crore (₹333.37 crore), recording a growth of 21.54 per cent.
However, the number of passengers carried during the period under review came down to 5.84 crore as against 6.22 crore in the same previous period.
The press release said work on doubling the railway track between Mangalore and Shoranur in the division has been completed. Yard remodelling work at Shoranur was completed within seven days instead of the scheduled 11 days. With the completion of the remodelling work, the doubling of the section has been completed.
Stating that rail electrification on the Shoranur Junction-Kannur section was making progress, it said the 86-km route between Shoranur and Kozhikode on this section would be commissioned soon. The remaining work between Kozhikode and Kannur would be completed by March 2015. The second phase of rail electrification between Kannur and Mangalore section would be taken up then, it added.
